The best album by The Soft Boys? Possibly! - This is the best batch of material by the original line-up (which included the supurb bass playing and stellar backing vocals of Andy Metcalfe). It contains their funniest cartoonish misogyny song - Wey Wey Hep Uh Hole (just beating Sandra s having her brain out and The Yodelling Hoover). Have a Heart Betty is hillarious barbershop quartet. Muriel s Hoof/Rout Of Clones is their best instumental. Let Me Put It Next To You, He s A Reptile and Empty Girl all could ve been hits! Love Poisoning and Blues In The Dark are some of Robyn s best ballads. Rock N Roll Toilet is boozy rock song (version two sounds like Kiss somehow). And When I Was A Kid is straight out of Syd Barrett s Pink Floyd (you can almost imagine the oil projectors going during this one). Great songs. Not as oveflowing as Underwater Moonlight, but fantastic all the same. A Stunner! Great songs, vocals, instumentation and production!
Why Is This Album Ignored? - Invisible seems to be a term Robyn wants to own and always attaches to interesting releases. Maybe he doesn t want you to know about them. Maybe it doesn t mean anything and just is a cool word that helps make things sound interesting. I just know this release can hold its own next to Underwater Moonlight anyday. Classic songs include When I Was A Kid, He s A Reptile, Weh Weh Hep Uh Hole, Rock N Roll Toilet, Let Me Put It Next To You, Have A Heart Betty, I m Not Fireproof, and maybe the best song he has ever written, Empty Girl. This may not gel as an album with the diversity of material, but this is a classic in the Soft Boys catalog. Personally I think it is better than Underwater Moonlight. Highly recommended.
